Should you take Centri BTL1 or CompTIA Security+ first?
Security+ first if you need a credential that passes HR filters, BTL1 first if you want to prove hands-on defensive skills to people who already work in a SOC. They measure different things: Security+ tests broad knowledge, BTL1 tests whether you can carry out an investigation.
Both cover security fundamentals, threats and incident response. Security+ treats them as concepts across the whole field; BTL1 narrows to the blue-team analyst and adds phishing analysis, digital forensics, SIEM work and threat intelligence as practical subjects.
BTL1 is practical, Security+ is a timed examBTL1 is a 24-hour practical incident-response assessment from Centri, formerly Security Blue Team: you investigate a lab environment and answer task-based questions from the evidence you find, with 70% needed to pass. Security+ is a single 90-minute sitting of up to 90 questions with a passing score of 750.
Security+ is wider, BTL1 is deeper on defenceSecurity+ also covers architecture, governance, risk and program management, which BTL1 does not. BTL1 spends its time on the analyst’s working tools — email headers, SIEM searches, forensic artifacts and intelligence sources — at a level Security+ does not reach.
Recognition differs by audienceSecurity+ appears in job specifications and in some compliance baselines, so it helps a CV get past automated screening. BTL1 carries more weight with practitioners deciding whether you can actually investigate an alert.
Many analysts end up holding bothBecause they prove different things, the two are complements rather than substitutes. Practice questions help with the recall both rely on, but nothing reproduces BTL1’s lab: the investigation itself has to be practised in a lab.
Which order
Taking them in sequence
If you are applying for your first security role, Security+ first usually opens more doors, with BTL1 after it to show practical ability. If you already have a role and want to demonstrate hands-on skill, BTL1 can come first. Confirm BTL1 pass thresholds and retake terms on Centri’s official page before booking, as these change periodically.

BTL1 is a practical investigation exam. These multiple-choice examples rehearse analytical decisions; they do not reproduce its hands-on exam format.
Question 1 of 3 · BTL1 · Phishing and security operations
Answer and explanation
Best answer: Integrity is unverified and the mismatch needs investigation
The mismatch means this copy has not passed integrity verification. Preserve the acquisition record and investigate the transfer or obtain a verified copy before relying on it.
Why the other choices fit less well
Names and sizes can remain unchanged when bytes differ. Silently replacing the acquisition hash conceals the discrepancy and undermines the evidence record.
Question 2 of 3 · Security+ · Threats, vulnerabilities, and mitigations
Answer and explanation
Best answer: Validate and apply the workaround, monitor it, and track the pending patch
A validated compensating control can reduce exposure while the permanent fix is pending. Retain the vulnerability record, residual risk, and a plan to apply and verify the patch.
Why the other choices fit less well
Waiting leaves exposure unchanged, and a hostname change does not block the flaw. A workaround reduces risk without necessarily removing the vulnerability, so closing it as permanently fixed overstates the evidence.
Best answer: Preserve the message and inspect headers and destinations in the approved analysis environment
Preserve the original message and inspect the actual addressing and destinations safely. The discrepancies support investigation without requiring a risky visit from a normal workstation.
Why the other choices fit less well
A display name is not proof of origin. Opening the link on production exposes the user. Mass forwarding spreads potentially harmful content and can alter the evidence context.
