Choosing between two certifications

Should you take Centri BTL1 or Microsoft SC-200?

SC-200 if you work, or want to work, in a Microsoft security stack; BTL1 if you want to prove you can run an investigation from raw evidence, whatever the tools. SC-200 tests the platform; BTL1 tests the analyst.

Where they overlap

The shared ground

Both are built for the security operations analyst and both cover incident response. SC-200 approaches it through Microsoft Sentinel and Defender XDR, with KQL as a working requirement; BTL1 through phishing analysis, SIEM searches, digital forensics and threat intelligence in a lab.

  • BTL1 is a lab, SC-200 is a timed examBTL1 gives you 24 hours of lab access to answer 20 task-based questions from the evidence you find, with 70% needed to pass. SC-200 provides 100 minutes for the assessment, with multiple-choice, drag-and-drop and case-study questions and a passing score of 700 out of 1000.
  • SC-200 is tied to one vendorSC-200 covers managing a security operations environment, configuring protections and detections, incident response and threat hunting, all inside Microsoft’s security tools. BTL1 is vendor-neutral: it teaches the investigation itself, with tools you could find in any SOC.
  • BTL1 is open book, SC-200 is proctoredBTL1 is unproctored and allows course material, notes and search engines, but not AI assistants. SC-200 is taken at a Pearson VUE test center or online with a proctor.
  • The retake terms differBTL1 includes two attempts with every purchase, with a 10-day wait after a failed attempt. Microsoft asks for a 24-hour wait after a first failed SC-200 attempt and 14 days between later ones, with at most five attempts in 12 months and a fee for each retake.
Which order

Taking them in sequence

Pick by environment first. In a Microsoft shop, SC-200 is the more immediately useful credential, and BTL1 shows practical skill alongside it. If your next employer’s tooling is unknown, BTL1 proves skills that carry over. Check Centri’s and Microsoft’s current terms before booking.

BTL1 is a practical investigation exam. These multiple-choice examples rehearse analytical decisions; they do not reproduce its hands-on exam format.

Question 1 of 3 · BTL1 · Phishing and security operations

A forensic image is transferred to an analysis workstation. Its filename and size match the source image, but its verification hash differs from the recorded acquisition hash. Which conclusion is justified?

Answer and explanation

Best answer: Integrity is unverified and the mismatch needs investigation

The mismatch means this copy has not passed integrity verification. Preserve the acquisition record and investigate the transfer or obtain a verified copy before relying on it.

Why the other choices fit less well

Names and sizes can remain unchanged when bytes differ. Silently replacing the acquisition hash conceals the discrepancy and undermines the evidence record.

Question 2 of 3 · SC-200 · Microsoft Sentinel investigations

A Sentinel scheduled rule produces alerts from verified query matches, but no incidents appear. Ingestion and rule execution are healthy. Which focused check should come before changing data collection?

Answer and explanation

Best answer: The rule incident-creation and grouping settings

Scheduled analytics can generate alerts while incident creation is disabled or configured differently. Check that part of the rule because query execution and ingestion are already confirmed.

Why the other choices fit less well

Alert severity and scheduling frequency do not enable incident creation. Reinstalling a connector is not justified when the relevant events already arrive and the rule produces alerts.

Question 3 of 3 · BTL1 · Phishing analysis

A suspicious email displays a familiar company name, but its Reply-To points to an unrelated domain and its link leads to a different hostname. What is the strongest next analytical step?

Answer and explanation

Best answer: Preserve the message and inspect headers and destinations in the approved analysis environment

Preserve the original message and inspect the actual addressing and destinations safely. The discrepancies support investigation without requiring a risky visit from a normal workstation.

Why the other choices fit less well

A display name is not proof of origin. Opening the link on production exposes the user. Mass forwarding spreads potentially harmful content and can alter the evidence context.
