CompTIA Network+ practice test: 546 questions, 31 PBQs, every answer explained

Start with 20 free Network+ practice questions, no card needed. Each one explains why the right answer fits and why the other options fail, and your results are scored by exam domain so you know what to study next, not just how many you got right.

Question 1 of 3 · Network architecture and protocols

Small packets cross a VPN, but larger packets fail. A capture shows that fragmentation is blocked, while the physical links remain healthy. Which investigation best targets the size-dependent failure?

Answer and explanation

Best answer: Path MTU and tunnel overhead

Tunnel overhead reduces available packet size. Examine the path MTU and the handling of packets that exceed it before changing unrelated services.

Why the other choices fit less well

DNS caching, application timeout, and DHCP lease duration do not explain a verified packet-size boundary across the tunnel.

Question 2 of 3 · Networking concepts

Which address belongs to an RFC 1918 private IPv4 range and requires an appropriate gateway or translation arrangement to communicate with the public internet?

Answer and explanation

Best answer: 172.20.14.8

172.20.14.8 lies within 172.16.0.0/12, one of the RFC 1918 private ranges. Private addresses are not globally unique public internet addresses.

Why the other choices fit less well

172.32.14.8 is outside 172.16.0.0–172.31.255.255. 192.169.1.8 is outside 192.168.0.0/16, and 11.0.0.8 is outside 10.0.0.0/8.

Question 3 of 3 · Network troubleshooting

One client cannot resolve an internal hostname. It reaches the service by IP, while another client resolves the same name. Which comparison is most useful first?

Answer and explanation

Best answer: The clients’ configured DNS resolvers and their answers

Compare the resolver configuration and query results on the working and failing clients. This tests the observed name-resolution difference without disrupting a reachable service.

Why the other choices fit less well

Display resolution, window size and keyboard layout do not explain the different DNS responses. Broader infrastructure changes would need additional evidence.

Which Network+ exam a practice test should match

N10-009 is the current Network+ exam, launched June 2024. Older N10-008 practice sets still circulate; the domains overlap, but 009 leans harder on cloud, software-defined networking and troubleshooting method.

This bank is written to N10-009. Every question states the domain it belongs to, so when you finish a set you see a score per domain, and the domains carry the same names CompTIA uses in the objectives.

What Network+ questions look like

Network+ questions describe a symptom — packets dropping, a VLAN that cannot reach its gateway, a wireless client that associates but gets no address — and ask for the most likely cause or the next diagnostic step. Expect subnetting you can do on paper, port numbers and protocol behaviour, and PBQs that have you place devices or read a configuration.

Multiple-choice (single and multiple response) plus performance-based questions (PBQs). The free preview mixes both kinds so you see the format before you pay for anything.

How to use a practice test so it actually predicts anything

Take the first 20 questions untimed and read every explanation, including the ones you got right. A practice test only teaches when you learn why the three wrong options were wrong; that is the judgement the exam scores, and it is the part most people skip.

Then take sets by domain, not at random. Network Troubleshooting is the largest domain in this bank at 127 questions, and the largest or second-largest on the exam. A domain score built on five questions means nothing; a domain score built on forty tells you something.

Only when every domain is steady should you sit a timed simulation. The simulation scores you at the end, with no feedback until you submit, which is the closest thing to exam day you can get without paying for an attempt.

The Network+ trap a practice test can hide

Treating it as a vocabulary exam. The scored skill is troubleshooting order: what you check first, what you rule out, what you change last. Guessing the answer that mentions the most acronyms is how people fail with a high "knowledge" score.

Network Troubleshooting is the largest domain in both the exam and this bank. If you miss there, the fastest gain is practising the diagnostic sequence rather than reading more theory.

What a practice score cannot tell you

No practice percentage predicts a pass. CompTIA scales its exam on a 100–900 range, which is not a percentage, and the real exam draws from a pool you have not seen. Treat a practice score as a map of where your reasoning is slow, not as a forecast.

These questions are original, written to the published objectives. They are not leaked exam items and do not claim to be. A practice test that promises "real exam questions" is either lying or selling you something that will get your certification revoked if you are caught with it.

Common questions

Frequently asked

Is the Network+ practice test free?

The first 20 questions are free with an account and no card. The full bank of 546 questions, including the 31 performance-based ones, is a one-time €19.99 with permanent access.

How many questions are on the real Network+ exam?

Up to 90 questions, in 90 minutes. The passing score is 720 (scored on a 100–900 scale).

Are these real Network+ exam questions?

No. They are original questions written to the N10-009 objectives. Using leaked exam content violates CompTIA's candidate agreement and can cost you the certification.

Does the practice test cover N10-009?

Yes. N10-009 is the current Network+ exam, launched June 2024. The bank was last reviewed in October 2026.
